READING FOR STUDY GUIDE: II Samuel 23: 13-17
Text: II Samuel 23: 1-39
Thesis: The stories of the Old Testament serve as forerunners or insights into the fulfillment of God’s commands and promises as described in the New Testament. So it is the story of David pouring out the water from the well at Bethlehem. It tells us of the desire of God that we would pour ourselves out before the One who came forth from Bethlehem, Jesus the Christ.
- II Samuel 23: 16-17 –“…he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord…Is it not the blood…”
- The blessing that David prayed for and asked for was not consumed by David, but instead poured out before God.
- God calls us to receive the blessings he grants us through grace and then give them back to Him as an offering demonstrating our love for Him
- John 4: 7-14 – “Will you give me a drink?”
- We’re set on Jesus quenching our thirst when we ought to be satisfying Him – quenching His thirst.
- As we give a drink to Him, He satisfies us with water that springs us from with in us.
- We should be pouring out now, spending to the last drop, not drawing on Him to satisfy us.
As Christ makes His request to us, “Will you give me a drink?” describe in your own words what we, who are limited and finite can give to an infinite and all powerful God.
- John 4: 23-23 – “…His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
- This means a life of pure, uncompromising, and uninduced devotion to Him wherever He places us!
- Pure – not mixed with other things, complete in itself
- Uncompromising – never less than what He desires
- Uninduced – not persuaded or cajoled
- We are to please Him in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.
Chose one of the three words, pure, uncompromising, or uninduced, and describe a situation in your life where you fell short of reaching God’s standard for what you offered Him. What do you now or will you do differently in regard to that matter?
- Philippians 2: 17 – “But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering…”
- POUR YOURSELF OUT BEFORE JESUS!
- The greatest blessing given is that of our live, new life through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Abandon or reject anything that competes with loyalty to Jesus Christ.
- The greatest competition to devotion to Jesus is service for Him.
- It is easier to serve than to be emptied out for Him.
- The one aim of the call of God is the satisfaction of God, not a call to do something for Him.
- We do things for people based on our nature and preferences.
- To satisfy someone means to act on the basis of that persons nature and preferences, not our own.
- To bring about such satisfaction, one must know intimately the person to be satisfied.
- So it is with Jesus Christ.
Write a prayer asking God to pour yourself out so that you might live to satisfy His thirst. Remember the difference between doing something for Him based on our nature and preferences vs. satisfying Him on the basis of His nature and preferences.
