Text: II Samuel 23: 1-39
Thesis: The stories of the Old Testament serve as forerunners or insights into the fulfillment of God’s commands and promises as described in the New Testament. So it is the story of David pouring out the water from the well at Bethlehem. It points to the gift of God that came forth from Bethlehem, and was poured out for us. That gift is our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
Christ now asks us for a drink. He desires that we would now be poured out for Him in true worship, devotion, and love.
- II Samuel 23: 16-17 –“…he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord…Is it not the blood…”
- The blessing that David prayed for and asked for was not consumed by David, but instead poured out before God.
- God calls us to receive the blessings he grants us through grace and then give them back to Him as an offering demonstrating our love for Christ.
- John 4: 7-14 – “Will you give me a drink?”
- We’re set on Jesus quenching our thirst when we ought to be satisfying Him – quenching His thirst.
- John 4: 13-14 – As we give Jesus a drink, He satisfies us with water that springs us from with in us.
- We should be pouring out now, spending to the last drop, not drawing on Him to satisfy us.
- Christ makes His request to us, “Will you give me a drink?” What can we, who are limited and finite give to an infinite and all powerful God?
GIVE YOURSELF TO JESUS!
WHAT SATISFIES JESUS’ THIRST
- John 4: 23-24 – “…His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
- This means a life of pure, uncompromising, and uninduced devotion to Him wherever He places us!
- Pure – not mixed with other things, complete in itself
- Uncompromising – never less than what He desires
- Uninduced – not persuaded or cajoled
- We are to please Him in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.
- Philippians 2: 17 – “But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering…”
- Philippians 2: 5-11 is known in church history as the “Christ Hymn.” It describes the “kenosis,” how Jesus poured Himself out on the altar of sacrifice that we would have life.
POUR YOURSELF OUT BEFORE JESUS!
- Philippians 2: 13 – “for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.”
- The one aim, purpose, focus of the call of God on one’s life is the satisfaction of God, not a call to do something for Him.
- Abandon or reject anything that competes with loyalty to Jesus Christ.
- The greatest competition to devotion to Jesus is service for Him.
- It is easier to serve than to be emptied out for Him.
- We do things for people based on our nature and preferences.
- To satisfy someone means to act on the basis of that person’s nature and preferences, not our own.
- To bring about such satisfaction, one must know intimately the person to be satisfied.
- So it is with Jesus Christ.
- Ask Christ to pour you out so that you might live to satisfy His thirst. Remember the difference between doing something for Him based on our nature and preferences vs. satisfying Him on the basis of His nature and preferences.
