Psalm 9:1-2 – I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.

(Use example of Corlis asking me to bring something sweet home, but doesn’t tell me what she wants.) The Psalmist, King David, spells out what God wants in the first two verses of Psalm 9.

I’d like to tell you what is in the heart of God. God wants to say to each one of us here today:

  1. “My desire is for you to love Me.” God wants above all else a relationship of mutual love!
  1. PRINCIPLE # 1 – GOD DOESN’T PLAY HARD TO GET!
  2. Psalm 9 is a Psalm of David sung to the tune of a song called “Death of the Son” written 1,000 years before Jesus was born.
  3. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as atoning sacrifice for our sin. (I John 4: 10)
  4. How badly does God want you to love God? So much that God traded the life of God’s only Son in exchange for yours, just so God could have you!
  1. The Lord says, My desire is that we would walk together in close and intimate relationship.”
    1. James 4:8 says “Come near to God and He will come near to you…”
    2. PRINCIPLE # 2 – God wants to be so close to you that God wants to live inside you!
    3. Listen to what the word says:
      1. 1 Corinthians 3:16 – Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (NKJV)
      2. 1 Corinthians 6:19 – Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
    4. Immediately, when you accept the love of God given through God’s Son, Jesus, God the Holy Spirit enters in and lives forever inside you.
    5. You can’t get more intimate than that!
  2. The final desire God is sharing today is, “I want you trust Me to guide your every decision, as you tell all, of My loving Presence with you.”
    1. PRINCIPLE # 3 – You give God thanks (regardless of your feelings), and God will give you Joy (regardless of your circumstances).
      1. There is an element of mystery in this transaction.
      2. Thankfulness opens your heart to God’s Presence and your mind to God’s thoughts.
      3. You may still be in the same place, with the same set of circumstances, but it is as if a light has been switched on, enabling you to see from God’s perspective.
    2. Use the example of the little girl who couldn’t understand why her father seemed to be hurting her puppy. Her father said to her, “You and the puppy will thank me in a minute. The father shared that he was taking a thorn from the puppy’s paw. Although it would hurt him for a moment it would cure him in the long run.
      1. There are some things happening in some of our lives we don’t like.
      2. Some of them are painful, some embarrassing, but when continue to thank God regardless of our feelings, God gives us joy, our hearts are open to God’s presence, our minds are open God’s thoughts and we see from God’s perspective.
      3. If you’ve been going through something, it’s your time to give God a shout of thanksgiving, letting God know you trust Him!

In this season of Thanksgiving where does God fit in with you?

Do you love God?

Do you walk intimately with God?

Do you trust God to guide your every decision?
