WE ARE CHRIST-CENTERED & OTHERS-FOCUSED!

Please allow me today to deviate from our typical approach to the gospel and use our time together today to make a heartfelt expression of gratitude to those members of the Body of Christ here at Quinn Chapel who are seasoned saints. By engaging the Scripture read earlier, we get a picture of how God has been working in the lives of those of us who are 60 years and older. The Baby Boomer generation is the second largest population group in America, second only to Millennials. When combined with the Silent Generation and the Greatest Generation they comprise the largest portion of the current population.

Let’s take a look through the Scriptures at what happened when two millennials took their baby to church. What we’ll find is a description of how God has been using you here in Quinn Chapel to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and to build the kingdom.

HOW GOD IS USING BOOMER

GOD HAS ALREADY PUT A DESIRE FOR HIS KINGDOM IN YOUR HEART!

  1. Simeon – Luke 2: 25-35

    1. 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
      1. Simeon (the Boomer) looking to the fulfillment of the word of God. CONSOLATION! (v.25)

      2. The Boomer saw Joseph, Mary, (the Millennials) and their child as their opportunity, not their problem. (v.27)

      3. The Boomer saw the Millennials through the eyes of the Holy Spirit. (vv. 25 & 27)

GOD MADE YOU THE ANSWER TO THE SCHEMES OF THE ENEMY!

  1. The enemy’s plan is to create division between generations. God’s plan is for all to know the Son.

    1. The Boomer embraced the child of the Millennials. (v. 28)

      1. The Millennials offered the child (v. 27)

      2. The Boomer reached out and took the child in his arms and praised God (v. 28)

  1. There ARE changes we are already making to reach the “Millennials” and “Gen Xers”!
  2. There things we are doing that make the gospel of Jesus Christ attractive to these generations!

YOUR ATTITUDE REFLECTS THE VERY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST!

  1. Luke 2: 29-32 29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31     which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

    1. Boomer has attitude of expectation, joy, honor, thanksgiving, optimism, hope, peace, and fulfilment
    2. Boomer prophesies the “Great Commission” (Matthew 28: 18-20)
    3. 33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him.34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
      1. Boomer spoke blessings over the baby and spoke into Millennial Mom what was to come.

      2. Ushering in the Christ.

      3. He blessed the family

  2. Paul’s word to boomers.

    1. To women: Titus 2: 3-5 –  Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

      1. Set the example

      2. And teach

    2. To men: Titus 2: 1-2 & 6-8 – You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.(A)Teach the older men(B) to be temperate,(C) worthy of respect, self-controlled,(D) and sound in faith,(E) in love and in endurance.…Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

      1. Set the example

      2. And teach

  3. Boomers add value to the lives of others:

    1. Wisdom – knowing how to apply facts, information, and the Word to lead to God’s intended outcomes in life;

    2. Experience – a collection of growth encounters that can be conveyed to those who are prepared to receive;

    3. Patience – the attitude that allows us to adjust our pace or direction of thought or movement to accommodate the reality of others.
