Genesis 2: 4-7 – This is the account(G) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(H) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(I) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(J) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(K) a man[c](L) from the dust(M) of the ground(N) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(O) of life,(P) and the man became a living being.

  1. Genesis 2:7 – Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
    1. formed a man from the dust of the ground”
      1. This is the body of the man only.
      2. It is the package that contains the thing of greatest value.
      3. The Hebrew for man (adam) sounds like and may be related to the Hebrew for ground (adamah); it is also the name Adam
    2. and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
      1. This is spirit!
      2. This is life!
      3. This is who we really are!
    1. You are spirit. Spirit is that which connects with God and thereby establishes reality of existence.
    2. God breathed into you the very breath of God which gave you life
      1. Job 27:3as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils,
      2. Genesis 7: 22 – Everything on dry land that had the breath of life(AD) in its nostrils died.
        1. (nishmat ruach chayyim)
        2. breath of the spirit life
    3. Your spirit connects you to God, who is Spirit.
    4. God breathed God’s own breath of life into man.
    5. So, what is the breath of God?
      1. It is the life and power of God, given to man to animate you.
      2. The Hebrew word for spirit is ruach, which means “wind, breath, air, spirit.”
      3. The life of God lives on and on; the immaterial part of man was designed to live eternally.
      4. The only question is, “HOW will we live WHILE ON THIS EARTH?”
        1. Will we live as spirit?
        2. Will we live as soul?
        3. Will we live as body?
  3. Your soul (will, intellect, & emotions) was given to you by God to express or articulate your being. Your soul is not who you are. It is a tool for presenting who you are & therefore must remain under the authority of your spirit.
    1. Romans 12: 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (or soul). Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing) and perfect will.
      1. Mind or Soul = will, intellect, emotions
      2. Will – God says, “I will transform what you want
      3. Intellect – God says, “I will transform what you think
      4. Emotions – God says, “I will transform what you feel
      5. Soul must remain under the authority of spirit which is under the authority of the Holy Spirit!
    2. God is saying: (Jesus Calling; Sarah Young)
      1. Remain in my presence.
      2. As your thoughts center more and more on Me, trust displaces fear, worry, anger, and other negative emotions.
      3. Your mind is like a seesaw. As your trust in Me goes up, fear and worry automatically go down.
      4. Time spent with Me not only increases your trust; it also helps you discern what is important and what is not.
      5. As you walk close to Me, saturating your mind with Scripture, I will show you how to spend your time and energy.
      6. My Word is a lamp to your feet; My Presence is a Light for your path.
  4. Your body (physical body, reflexes, drives) is simply the vehicle assigned to carry you, a spirit and the Spirit of God, as you command it through the tool of your soul. The body must always remain under the authority of the spirit as articulated through your soul.
    1. I Corinthians 6: 19-20Do you not know that your bodies are temples(AB) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(AC) 20 you were bought at a price.(AD) Therefore honor God with your bodies.(AE)
    2. Temple – a place of worship
      1. Before you knew Christ your body was a shack
      2. Now it is the place where the worship of God is conducted
    3. Holy Spirit is the proprietor of the place of worship known as your body
      1. Before Christ it was considered our personal property
      2. Now God owns us and not we ourselves. We have no right to do with our bodies what we wish, for they are not our own.
    4. God acquired our bodies by purchase or ransom paid on the cross of Jesus Christ where He shed His blood.
      1. This caused a change in rights of ownership
      2. You are a spirit that has a soul and live in a body.
